What began as a small, weathered cabin on a remote stretch of British Columbia’s coast has become a self-sufficient retreat overlooking Jervis Inlet.

In Egmont, Woven Architecture and Design renovated the original structure and added a new volume, preserving the cabin’s modest character while creating dedicated spaces for cooking, dining, living, and sleeping.

Accessible only by a secluded logging road, the retreat offers an escape from the pace and stimulation of urban life, with its remote setting shaping both the architecture and the experience of living there.

The dark, understated addition sits quietly among towering evergreens, its simple geometric form contrasting with the irregular terrain of exposed boulders, grasses, and coastal vegetation.

Rather than imposing itself on the landscape, the architecture allows the surrounding forest and natural topography to remain the dominant features of the site.

Sitting on a rocky knoll, the retreat extends toward the inlet through a series of outdoor rooms that connect the architecture with its coastal surroundings.

Framed by towering evergreens, the expansive timber deck creates distinct spaces for gathering, dining, and quiet contemplation, with sweeping views across the water to the distant coastal mountains.

A dining terrace, firepit, pizza oven, and generous deck with an outdoor kitchen make the landscape part of everyday life.

The restrained furnishings and open arrangement preserve a sense of connection to the surrounding landscape, allowing the changing light, water, and mountain scenery to define the experience of outdoor living.

The project’s relationship with the existing cabin is also a practical environmental decision.

Renovating half of the home avoided a substantial amount of new construction, while the addition is raised on wood stilts to reduce the concrete needed for its foundation.

The retreat operates off-grid, with solar power, well water, and septic infrastructure.

Because solar production can fluctuate, a large propane tank delivered and refilled by barge provides backup energy; a wood stove can heat the home when needed.

The systems reflect the realities of remote living, where self-sufficiency requires planning as much as independence.

Material choices respond to the coastal conditions and the surrounding landscape.

Metal siding, Western Red Cedar siding, and a cedar deck were selected for durability, while the dark exterior palette helps the building sit among the site’s muted tones.

Fire resilience is addressed through a non-combustible gravel perimeter and a suppression system that draws water from a nearby pond.

These measures are integrated into the property’s everyday infrastructure, rather than treated as afterthoughts.

At the entry, a hand-carved totem pole stands opposite the door, connecting the arrival to the client’s cultural heritage.

The result is a retreat shaped by its remoteness: a renovated cabin, a restrained addition, and a collection of outdoor spaces that make the inlet and forest part of daily life.
